Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Our Common Bond?

Our Common Bond is the official Australian Government study resource produced by the Department of Home Affairs. It is the only material you need to study for the citizenship test — every question in the test is drawn from this document. It covers Australian history and people, Australian values, democratic beliefs and rights, government and law, and the citizenship journey.

In Australia, a referendum is a vote to change what?

In Australia, a referendum is a vote by Australian citizens to change the Australian Constitution. A referendum must be passed by a national majority and a majority in at least four of the six states before the Constitution can be changed.

When did the separate colonies join together to become Australia?

The separate colonies joined together to form a federation called the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901. This date is when Australia's national democratic institutions — the national parliament, government, and High Court — were first established.

What is the pass mark for the Australian citizenship test?

You need to answer at least 15 out of 20 questions correctly (75%) to pass the Australian citizenship test. Our practice tests use the same pass mark so you know exactly where you stand.

How many questions are in the Australian citizenship test?

The Australian citizenship test has 20 questions. There is no time limit. Questions are drawn from the five topic areas in Our Common Bond: Australia and its people, Australian values, democratic beliefs, government and the law, and becoming an Australian citizen.

Is the Australian citizenship test 50 questions?

No. The actual test is 20 multiple-choice questions drawn from a bank of 100, and you need 15 correct (75%) to pass. The "50 questions" figure does not match the official format — it sometimes appears in older third-party quiz apps. Our free practice tests match the real format, and you can work through all 100 possible questions so nothing is a surprise on test day.

Who were Australia's first inhabitants?

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are Australia's first inhabitants, with archaeological evidence suggesting they arrived between 65,000 and 40,000 years ago. They are recognised as the traditional custodians of the land.

What happens if I fail the Australian citizenship test?

If you do not pass, you can sit the test again. There is no limit on the number of attempts. You will be invited to a new appointment, which you book through ImmiAccount. Use the time between attempts to work through practice tests and focus on the topic areas where you lost marks.

Are there special rules for people over 60?

Applicants aged 60 or over are exempt from sitting the citizenship test and from the English language requirement. You still attend a citizenship ceremony and make the pledge of commitment, but no written test is required.
